Socially Responsible Brands Available at the Drugstore

Socially Responsible Products from the Drugstore

As a communication student, we were constantly reminded by our professors to be conscious consumers. They stressed the importance of being a discerning consumer, and researching the companies that we purchase from. Although this is a very time consuming process, after a while I started to develop favorites and found easier ways to decipher from the green-washing products and the real thing. There are a few brands that I highly recommend and enjoy.

NYX Cosmetics

I love this brand for cosmetics. The products are very affordable and trendy. All their products are 100% cruelty free (not tested on animals).

Method

Another Drugstore gem, Method creates cleaning products without any toxic chemicals and they work. It helps that they smell great, have cute packaging, are safe for the environment, as well as being cruelty-free. The product that I use the most of the grapefruit all purpose cleaner.

Burts Bees

Burts Bees’ emphasizes on sustainability and natural ingredients. Most of their products are 100% natural, well a small allotment are 99% natural, so that is pretty close to perfection. The lip balms, the face washes, the face creams, are all wonderful products.

Natracare

Although there are feminine hygiene products that may be more socially responsible, such as diva cups or fabric pads, I can’t bring myself to use them. It seems to complicate the process.  Natracare is a good alternative, they use high quality natural materials that are also animal friendly.

It is very difficult to be a socially-responsible consumer, if you are ever in doubt, there are so many websites online that are quick cheat sheets if you are ever questioning the integrity of the brand. After a while you will start to develop a routine. A good rule of thumb for cruelty-free products is the Peta website. They are an awesome resource for offering alternatives to the products you probably already use. Sometimes just making well educated decisions, is the stepping stone to making changes in the products that are available to us.
