Why I am Mad at Kim Kardashian and Amber Rose

Quite a few websites that I respect and value posted articles of how proud they are of Kim Kardashian for standing up for herself in her open letter. She stated that she is proud of her body and she is embracing her sexuality. How it is liberating and she should not be slut shamed.I am glad that she stood up for herself and I am not trying to bully her, but there is a misuse when it comes to using the word “slut shaming”. Society has confused women into believing there is a correlation between “empowerment” as “sexuality” or vise versa. I am sure there are moms all over the world that are cringing when they read:

I am empowered by my body. I am empowered by my sexuality. I am empowered by feeling comfortable in my skin. I am empowered by showing the world my flaws and not being afraid of what anyone is going to say about me. And I hope that through this platform I have been given, I can encourage the same empowerment for girls and women all over the world.

Kim Kardashian goes on to say that she makes good lifestyle choices, she does not drink, she hasn’t committed a crime and she doesn’t do drugs. Why turn to slut shaming? Amber Rose voiced her concerns and organized a slut walk, using it as a platform to tell her story. Amber Rose is constantly demanding respect, however she continues to share her sex-capes with the whole world as a way to hold the spotlight. She recently told Huffington Post that there is a double standard between men and women, using Channing Tatum as an example. He was a previous stripper, like herself, but no one cares because he is a male.

This angered me, people work hard to gain respect. Lets take a second and compare resumes. Channing Tatum has appeared in 44 films and produced 10. Amber Rose has appeared in 12 films, none of them major blockbusters, majority of them, she appears as herself. If you want to make an adequate comparison, maybe Mike “The Situation” Sorrento, who also used to be a stripper, would be a better choice.

I have news for you Amber Rose, there are quite a few celebrities that were strippers, but still manage to have strong careers. Could it be possible that we are over-using the word slut-shaming? I am all for empowering women, but maybe the first step to gaining the respect you crave, is to do something notable. Catherine Zeta Jones, Lady Gaga and Eve, are a few of the names I found with a simple google search of celebrities that used to be strippers. Lady Gaga is the perfect example of someone who knows who she is, and uses her fame as a channel to spread empowering messages, activate and lead change.

Women do carry a larger burden than men to be role models. Women have had to fight for equal rights, and in some countries it is still not a reality. Is Amber Rose’s goal for the world to not take notice when she takes off all her clothes? To me, the only reason Amber Rose has a spotlight, is because she leads with nudity, her sexuality and her appearance. Women continue to struggle with being valued based solely upon their attractiveness. The media focuses on what women are wearing, instead of relishing their accomplishments. The Globe and Mail just sited this issue this week, which is a step in the right direction. I have touched on this subject in a previous post, and it continues to be a relevant topic of discussion.

For years men have viewed women as objects. Women were thought of as the inferior sex in the mind of males. A part of me feels that Kim Kardashian, doesn’t know better. She is not familiar with women’s rights and is unable to comprehend how her actions affect women as a whole. Kim is a smart business women, she has taken a sex tape and turned it into an entire empire, however she has done it by selling herself as a brand. The public is wondering what she is wearing and what make-up she is using. They do not turn to her for guidance or view her as a genius. Kim Kardashian’s appearance is her only value she had presented to the public.

Kim, you are not my role model. My role models are women that are actively combating gender norms; Marrisa Mayer, Emma Watson, Amal Clooney, Angelina Jolie, Michelle Obama are all on my list of empowering women. While Kim is posting naked photos and selfies all day, Emma Watson is gaining traction with gender inequality. The message Kim is sending to young girls, is in order to be rich and famous, you need to focus your energy on looking good.

Kim, you may not be a slut, but you are not empowering. The women that understand that there is more to life than striving for the most likes on your recent nude. Stop offering your body, and offer the world some actual liberation. Women’s looks need to be taken off trial. Donald Trump can tell people they can’t do there job because of the way they look, but we all know that he is a fool.
