I looked back on the blog post I did last year with my goals for 2016 and it was cringeworthy. The goals I want to set for 2017 are very similar to the goals I obviously set and did not achieve for 2016…Oops, there goes another year.
I did have some surprising changes in 2016. It felt like a rough year and judging by all the internet memes I am the only one that feels this way. It was definitely a transitional year for me. I have a new role at my new job, my boyfriend and I stopped doing long distance and we officially moved in together, as well as the most stressful time of my life, selling my old place, renovating and moving into a new place. All of which happened in the last four months. Although these are all good things, it has been a very uncomfortable time for me, so I am looking forward to calmer 2017.
Purge Often, Spend Less
The one thing I noticed when I was de-cluttering in preparation to move, was the amount of things I keep and how little I use them. It was an exhausting task going through everything and when it came time to move I ended up throwing away majority of my stuff because I realized that I didn’t really need it.
Since I sold majority of my furniture before my move, I have been buying new furniture for our new place which has been rather expensive. I let it get a bit out of control but I have been trying to nest so our new place feels more like home. For 2017 I want to try to purge on a regular basis, and cut down on my impulse buys. Why spend when you can save for more important things…like vacations!
Bring Back Routine
The last few years have really lacked routine. I used to have a green smoothie for breakfast every morning, hit the gym after work and then go home to cook dinner and pack my lunch for the next day. My schedule has been so up in the air and with our kitchen renovation, we have had no oven, stove, sink or microwave for the past two months so meal prep has been difficult. I am now so sick and tired of eating out. I am really looking forward to have some normalcy and creating a new routine for 2017. I also have been neglecting the things I like to do on the side, and I haven’t been very consistent with my blog. Look forward to seeing scheduled post for 2017! Home decor is going to become a reoccurring theme!
Keeping in Touch and Making Plans
I have cancelled majority of the plans I have made as of late, because I have had so much going on. I found myself having more phone dates than hangouts, which actually turned out to be not a bad alternative. I find I get caught up in my own life. I want to make sure I make checking in on my friends a priority for 2017, doing a better job of maintaining my friendships and making plans to go on more adventures.
Being a Better Person
The one positive that has come out of renovating, is recognizing the true friends I have in my life. Quite a few of my friends said that they were so excited and would love to help; when it actually came time to help, most of them flaked. The ones that did show up were great and so supportive and I am very thankful to have them in my life. I noticed some people in my life tend to only reach out when they need something. It has really started to bother me, so I have been trying to make a conscious effort to notice the behaviours in others that do not sit well with me, and ensure that I do not mirror those behaviours. Instead of creating conflicts and focusing on the negative, I want to focus on letting go and being more supportive of the people around me.
Get Involved
Sometimes it feels like all I do is work, work, work, work. I do work weekends every-so-often, however I just like to whine, it really isn’t that bad. Now that I am feeling more comfortable in my role, I would love to take on other responsibilities. A few people that I work with volunteer as board members for non-profits. My goal for 2017, is to get involved in a cause that I care about and try something new.
I am very hopeful for 2017. The things that have changed in my life are for the better, so I really shouldn’t be complaining. I am very fortunate for everything that I have in my life and I am excited for all the ebbs and flows of a new year.
Do you have some goals for 2017? How do you stay on track? I would love to hear from you!
Goodbye 2016!
