Wedding Guest Looks

Photograph by Ness Photography

It is wedding season. This year we only have one wedding to attend but I have quite a few friends who recently got engaged so I have a feeling that next year is going to be a busy one. I really struggle with wedding guest looks because usually, the “it colour” of the season ends up being the colour of most bridesmaid dresses. It is also an event that is heavily photographed, so choosing a dress that is timeless yet trendy can be difficult to navigate. AND of course the most important rule, avoid white and anything that may photograph as white; steer clear of grey, silver, really pale pinks, you don’t want it to seem like you are trying to upstage the bride.

What to Look for in a Dress

Confort is number one for me. I always think of the setting and what I need from my dress. For a church wedding, usually something conservative, for an outdoor wedding something that breathes, and for pretty much all weddings, something you can dance in. I have a tendency to try my best to be prepared so the minute I get a save the date, I am on the prowl for dresses. My go to places to shop for dresses are Lulus, BCBGenerationForever21ASOS and Zara.

I put together a few of my top choices to wear to weddings this season, with something for every budget and every body type.

Lace Dresses

Lace was trending last year, but I think it still is a good option for this season. I like lace for a wedding guest look because it is really timeless and romantic. Lace also tends to be a thicker and more structured fabric so if you have some bumps and lumps you want to hide, it is very flattering. The dress above from H & M comes in six colours and is only $99.

Jumpsuits & Rompers

As I have already mentioned, comfort is key and if you are risk adverse wearing a jumpsuit or romper ensures there are no wardrobe malfunctions if you are bopping around on the dance floor. Not only are they practical but they also look very polished at events. This linen one shown above is perfect for an outdoor backyard wedding.

Maxi Dresses

Maxi dresses are currently my wedding go-to. I usually try to find some that is breezy and airy so I don’t overheat, which is especially important if you are going to a destination wedding. I am especially conscious of colours and fabrics that show sweat marks. Depending on the fabric and style you can go for a formal look or a boho look. I also love anything with a slit, think of Angelina Jolie legs slit in at the 2012 Oscars. The dress above is on sale now for only $22.

Off the Shoulder Dresses

Off the shoulder is a look that I can’t get enough of, for casual and formal attire. It is sexy yet still conservative. I love the bold colours of the dress above and it is currently on sale for $72!

I have also shared a few more wedding guest looks below. Let me know in the comments which one you would choose to wear at a wedding that you have coming up.
