An easy guide to performing your own new moon ritual and why it is important
One of my resolutions in 2019 was to get more personal on my blog. I shared my break up, my struggles with figuring out my career and my uncomfortable dating moments. It only seemed like a natural progression, that I share my shameful and humourous obsessions with astrology, psychics, and tarot card readings.
So, I confess that I look up my prospective partners on MyLoveCal, I check my Costars daily and I perform new moon rituals. I get made fun of for it, I believe everything happens for a reason and that things always work out the way they should, the universe will take care of me. A little crazy, yes, I get it, sometimes I cross-reference my daily horoscope at the end of the day to see if there was any validity to it. Let us call me a semi-believer.
I thought I would share the new moon ritual because despite the airy-fairy side of things, it is a good time to reflect, goal set, and set intentions for the month ahead. It is a nice pulse check to track progress and recentre.

Figure Out the Date
Determine the date of the new moon, Google is the best resource for this. There is some lieu-way to perform the new moon ritual a couple days before or a couple days after if you can’t schedule a time to sit down and do it right away.
Set the Mood
Sit down, put on some relaxing music, light a candle, put some essential oils in a diffuser, turn off all the lights. Be present with yourself, take some deep breathes, and just reflect.
Some article suggest saying a prayer to the universe to clear the space, or you can smudge the space if that feels more comfortable to you. I think its important to find what feels right for you.
Let it All Out
Take the time to write out how you are feeling:
- What has been holding you back?
- What are you holding on to that is not serving you?
- What are the things that you are going to achieve?
- What are the things that you are going to let enter into your life?
- What are the things that you are going to let go out of your life?
Write it all out make sure to use the word “I am going to” not ” I would like” or “I am trying to”. Set an clear intention for the month ahead.
Sit With It
Meditate on it for a little bit. Sit with your thoughts and intentions. Study it and really reflect on the focus for the month. Take a few breathes and let a sense of gratitude come over you. Readout each intention line by line so that you can really let them sink in.
Light it on Fire
Let it burn, light the letter on fire with your candle and let it burn in the glass bowl (I like to have my water element nearby, just in case things go sideways).
Release
Make sure you are outside and send those thoughts out into the world! Some people do a little dance under the moonlight or have a chant or a song. I like silence and just being present. Take the bowl of ashes, and let them blow away. Let the universe do its thing.
Okay don’t rely fully on the universe, putting a plan together and working towards those goals is also required. I am not going to place all my bets on the universe, but I do think vocalizing my plans helps. It creates a routine around manifesting and letting go. I like the idea of cleansing and having a fresh start, much like a new year’s resolution.
My best friend and I hold each other accountable so that we routinely perform our ceremony. I find that I feel a sense of peace after.
I like sharing anything that I find helps clear my mind or motivate me. Let me know in the comments below if you tried the new moon routine and how you like it.
